Make the question specific

Define what you will observe. Ask what changes, what you will measure and what comparison would help answer the question.

Separate variables from assumptions

Changing several conditions at once can make results difficult to interpret. Keep relevant conditions consistent where possible, and record factors you cannot control.

Measure and document

Record the method, instruments and observations. Repeated measurements can reveal variation. An unexpected result can be useful when the procedure is clear enough to inspect.

Connect evidence to explanations

Evidence can support or weaken an explanation without settling every question. Consider alternatives and the limits of your measurements before drawing a conclusion.

Take the next step

Write down one question this guide raised. Identify what you would need to observe, compare or learn before turning it into a project.
